Flax Seed Podi (Powder) Recipe
Flax Seed Podi is a flavorful South Indian spice powder that can be enjoyed with rice, idlis, dosas, or mixed with ghee or oil. This healthy and nutritious podi is easy to prepare and adds a delicious twist to your meals.
Ingredients for Flax seed podi:
- 1/2 cup flax seeds
- 1/4 cup urad dal (black gram lentils)
- 1/4 cup chana dal (split chickpeas)
- 4-5 dried red chilies (adjust according to spice preference)
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil
Instructions:
- Roast Flax Seeds:
- Heat a pan on medium heat and dry roast the flax seeds until they start to crackle and become slightly golden. Set aside and let them cool.
- Roast Lentils and Spices:
- In the same pan, add oil and heat it.
- Add urad dal, chana dal, and dried red chilies. Roast until the lentils turn golden brown.
- Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, black peppercorns, sesame seeds (if using), and asafoetida. Roast for another minute until the spices release their aroma.
- Add turmeric powder and salt, then remove the mixture from heat and let it cool.
- Grind the Mixture:
- Once all the roasted ingredients have cooled down, transfer them to a mixer or grinder.
- Grind the mixture to a coarse or fine powder, depending on your preference.
- Combine and Store:
- Add the roasted flax seeds to the grinder and pulse a few times until everything is well combined.
- Transfer the flax seed podi to an airtight container and store it in a cool, dry place.
Serving Suggestions:
